The project report from the KAFFE project has now been completed and published, together with the recommendations that form an important part of the project’s results. They are available under a shared DOI for the project report and recommendations from the KAFFE project, and the recommendations are also published as a separate web page at SND.se: Recommendations from the KAFFE project

The KAFFE project has examined the current state of Swedish e-infrastructure for research and how well it meets researchers’ needs in relation to research data management. The aim of the project was to create a clearer picture of where support to researchers works well, where there are shortcomings, and how the system as a whole can be developed to better support research in the future.

Highlighting the differences between expectations and practice

The project report compares how research data management as a process is described in various inquiries and reports with how researchers themselves view work with research data. The report also highlights differences between expectations and practice, including by examining the concepts and terminology used in the studied texts.

The accompanying recommendations are addressed to actors at different levels in the Swedish research system, and are based on the needs and challenges described by the researchers in the interviews conducted within the project. The recommendations are intended to reduce the gap between policy and practice, strengthen national coordination, and ensure that the development of e-infrastructure is based on the actual needs of research and researchers.

While the recommendations are available in both Swedish and English online, the published documents on Zenodo are currently in Swedish. An English version of relevant parts of the project report will be made available later this year.

Next steps for the KAFFE work

As part of the continued KAFFE work at the SND office, processing and analysis of the interview study material are now being finalized. The material will be made available via DORIS on Researchdata.se. Simultaneously, in-depth analyses are being carried out of the interviews, the capability mapping, and the terminological gaps identified during the project. This work will form the basis of a package containing an updated interview guide and an adaptable capability map. These can be used to support future researcher interviews and mappings of researchers’ practices and needs in research data management.

The update is being carried out primarily to ensure consistent terminology and to make it possible to adapt mappings to local needs at higher education institutions and research-performing public agencies. As part of the continued work, researcher interviews are also being carried out at Chalmers University of Technology, and SciLifeLab is preparing to begin corresponding interviews.Another task ahead is to provide an English version of the project report.

Don’t miss our webinar on the results of the KAFFE project

On 2 September, from 10:00 to 12:00, SND is organizing a webinar on the outcomes of the KAFFE project: Results and recommendations from the KAFFE project. During the webinar, we will present the results and provide a status update on the ongoing work, as well as allowing time for questions and discussion.
