SND's organization
SND is a national research infrastructure dedicated to ensuring that research data and related materials are accessible, well-preserved, and reusable. The organization is governed by a consortium of nine universities and primarily funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR) and the consortium universities. In addition to the consortium members, the SND Network includes more than 30 Swedish universities and research organizations.
SND is governed by a national consortium
Swedish National Data Service was established in 2008 on the initiative of the Swedish Research Council. Since January 1, 2018, it has been run as a consortium led by the University of Gothenburg. The other consortium members are Chalmers University of Technology, Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Lund University, Stockholm University, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå University, and Uppsala University. SND’s Steering Committee has overall responsibility for the organization, while the SND Director oversees daily operations.
Domain specialists and Flagship projects
The consortium universities contribute expertise in various aspects of research data management:
- Domain specialists are experts in specific scientific disciplines or types of research data. Their main role is to support both researchers and local units for research data support (DAU) in matters related to research data and open access.
You can find all domain specialists listed on our contact page.
- Flagships play a key role in developing tools and methods that help researchers share and reuse data more easily. These time-limited projects aim to promote open access to research data in a broad sense. A central idea behind them is that their results should benefit the wider research community, not just the universities and organizations involved.

A strong national network of universities and research organizations
The SND network consists of universities and government agencies that have established local research data support units, known as Data Access Units (DAU). These units play a crucial role in helping researchers make their data as accessible as possible.
While the members of the SND network operate independently in managing research data, they receive guidance and support from SND. The SND main office serves as a hub for these local support units, forming a comprehensive national infrastructure for research data.
