Simplified registration

What is it?

In DORIS, you can describe and share data through Simplified registration, a special metadata profile that contains a minimal number of fields. Datasets described and shared through simplified registration do not reach the same level of FAIR compliance as other dataset descriptions.

Datasets published through simplified registration can later be enriched with additional metadata by switching to one of the standard research area profiles. Please note that updates to metadata for published datasets do not require a new review.

SND applies a lighter review process for data and metadata published through simplified registration. See below for more information.

Why use it?

Simplified registration is available as an option for researchers who prefer a quicker process and are sharing a smaller dataset or less complex material that does not require extensive metadata.

The profile is intended as an alternative to publishing via other general repositories or portals. It offers a faster publication process, while the organization responsible for the data (the research principal) retains control over how the data are shared and data files can be stored locally (or in SND CARE, if an agreement is in place).

In the DORIS interface, it is up to each researcher to decide whether to use simplified registration. Information is provided to clarify that this profile meets the FAIR principles to a lesser extent than the standard profiles.

Level of review

SND applies less stringent review requirements for data and metadata described and shared through simplified registration.

For simplified registration, the following applies:

  • Data must be shared with an appropriate access level based on their content. For example, data containing sensitive personal information must be shared with restricted access. In other cases, it is up to the organization responsible for the data to determine what can be shared openly and what should have restricted access.
  • The material to be shared and/or described must qualify as research data. In this context, research data refers to digital material that can form the basis of scientific analysis, regardless of discipline (for example, presentations, individual graphs, or appendix material are not included in this definition).

SND also recommends that metadata be as accurate as possible and that persistent identifiers are used wherever possible (for example, ORCID for individuals, ROR ID for organizations, and PID for linked resources).

Responsible organizations may set additional requirements before publication. The SND office does not perform any additional reviews of these dataset descriptions.

Further details on the general review process are available in the document Krav och rekommendationer för data och metadata som delas via DORIS (Requirements and recommendations for data and metadata shared via DORIS).
