The Swedish National Data Service has now received funding from the Swedish Research Council for the Swedish participation in CESSDA ERIC until 2016.
The Research Council’s funding for work with CESSDA ERIC amounts to SEK 1 million per annum from 2013 until 2016. The first million will cover the CESSDA work already completed during 2013.
The funding application was originally approved in 2011 but the legal entity of CESSDA was not established until 2013, which is why the funding has not been received until now.
CESSDA has served as an umbrella organization for the European national data archives since 1976. It is now being established as a European research infrastructure with 13 individual countries as members. Among many other activities, CESSDA maintains a portal with centralized access to data from the member countries’ data archives. CESSDA also supports the data archives in their development of standards and tools, as well as in the training of archive employees.
For technical reasons CESSDA will first be established as a Norwegian limited company. It will later be changed to a new legal structure as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).
CESSDA ERIC’s central organization is located in Norway, which, together with Germany, provides most of the financial support. CESSDA was inaugurated on December 5. SND’s Director Hans Jørgen Marker is on its board of directors.
