SND is coming to Almedalsveckan 2024

Published: 2024-05-15

As part of an initiative to increase SND’s visibility and collaboration with stakeholders on the national arena, SND will visit the Almedalsveckan democracy festival this year. In addition to having representatives on site for most of the week, SND will also organize a panel discussion with the theme “Vägen mot öppen tillgång till forskningsdata – hur går omställningen?” (The Road to Open Access to Research Data – How is the Transition Progressing?) together with Public & Science Sweden (Vetenskap & Allmänhet).

—It feels great to do this together with Public & Science Sweden, because their purpose is to promote dialogue and collaboration on research and democracy issues, says Eva Stensköld, Director of SND.

In the latest research bill, the goal is for Sweden to have transitioned to a system of open access to research data by 2026. With quite a short time left to 2026, SND and Public & Science Sweden invite you to a panel discussion during Almedalsveckan together with representatives from organizations and public authorities that are highly involved in the transition. How is it going, will we achieve the goal, and what do we need to do to achieve it?

Participants in the discussion include Gustav Nilsonne from SND and Karolinska Institutet, Hanifeh Khayyeri from RISE, Gabriele Messori from Uppsala University and the Young Academy of Sweden (SUA), Wilhelm Widmark from Stockholm University and SUHF, and Sumithra Velupillai from the Swedish Research Council. As moderator for the discussion we see Anna Wetterbom, CEO of the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation.

—I'm excited that Anna will moderate. She has previously been the CEO of SUA, has worked at the Government Offices on research data issues, and at the Swedish Research Council on research infrastructure issues. She is usually a sharp and incisive moderator who asks those important but sometimes challenging questions that need to be answered. I'm looking forward to it,” says Eva Stensköld.

The event takes place on June 26 at 1:30 PM at Vetenskap & Allmänhets arena för forskning och demokrati, Skeppsbron 24, Joda Bar och kök.

An initiative for outreach and collaboration

As a research infrastructure in constant development, SND is in a phase of increased outreach and collaboration, where participation at Almedalsveckan is one of the activities.

—Now is the time, for several reasons, to turn outward. The nine major universities in our consortium have been asking for more collaboration, more national coordination, and increased visibility and presence, says Eva Stensköld.

SND will have representatives on site throughout Almedalsveckan. In addition to SND’s director Eva Stensköld and senior advisor Gustav Nilsonne, we also have Lisa Isaksson, language coordinator, and Karin Westin Tikkanen, training coordinator, present.

—We will be available for most of the week to network and participate in the week's events. But we can also contribute to others' events. Between the four of us, we have a broad range of expertise and are willing to serve as panel participants, commentators, or moderators. Feel free to ask us while we are there. It's a win-win situation for collaborations and synergies, says Eva Stensköld.
