The Swedish Research Council has decided to award grants to the Swedish National Data Service.
SND is one of the organizations granted funding in the Research Council’s call for research infrastructures. In total, approximately 4 billion SEK are distributed over an eight-year period. The exact amounts have not yet been decided for most of the supported infrastructures.
– We are very pleased that our application has been granted funding, and we are looking forward to the negotiations with the research council on the assignment and the exact amount, says SND director Max Petzold.
SND’s current funding and assignment run until the end of 2017. From next year, the SND organization and activities are planned to be changed and expanded. The University of Gothenburg (GU) will continue to host SND, but a consortium of seven universities will lead the organization. In addition to GU, Karolinska institutet, Lund University, Stockholm University, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umeå University and Uppsala University are members in the consortium. The seven universities will also contribute with expert knowledge in data management in various scientific fields, and will thus act as national knowledge centers to increase access to well documented and well-preserved research data.
In the new model for SND’s operations, the network of currently 26 universities is also central. At these universities, local functions (so-called "Data Access Units") will be established in the next few years, to help researchers make their data available at the end of a project or in connection with publication.
