Broad participation in a project on research data management needs

Published: 2025-03-21

The KAFFE project has officially launched its work following an inspiring kick-off. The participants in the project's working groups represent a wide range of universities, research authorities, and research institutes, bringing valuable expertise to KAFFE. Each group focuses on one of the project's three tracks.

Gustav Nilsonne and Karin Westin Tikkanen, Senior Advisors at SND, lead Track 1, which maps the e-infrastructure landscape based on previous reports, studies, and investigations. In addition to Gustav and Karin, the working group includes participants from Karolinska Institutet, Malmö University, Mälardalen University, Stockholm School of Economics, Stockholm University, Swedish Defence University, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), University of Gothenburg, and Uppsala University. In the initial phase, they will compile information from a dozen recently produced texts on various aspects of Sweden's e-infrastructure for research. They will also examine the relevant surveys that are being or have recently been conducted at Swedish higher education institutions.

Terminology and capabilities

Track 2 is led by Lisa Isaksson and Stefan Ekman, Language Coordinator and Senior Advisor at SND, respectively. This track aims to compile an overview of the terminology used in the various texts analyzed in Track 1 and to explore the challenges that arise when different stakeholders use different terms for the same concept or understand key concepts in different ways. So far, the working group includes staff from Chalmers University of Technology, Södertörn University, and Uppsala University. In addition to the terminology overview, the group will also develop clear baseline definitions of the research data-related capabilities that form the basis for the mapping in Track 3.

Interviews with researchers

Track 3 is led by Sverker Holmgren, Director of Chalmers e-Commons, and Madeleine Dutoit, Training Coordinator at SND. The working group in this track will conduct interviews to analyze research data-related needs and practices among a broad range of researchers from various disciplines and institutions. The group's seventeen participants come from Chalmers University of Technology, Lund University, RISE, SLU, SLU/SITES, Stockholm School of Economics, Stockholm University, the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, Umeå University, University of Borås, and Uppsala University.

The working groups have started their work, and the project's structure and a status report will be presented to the SND Network when the project management team participates in the the SND Network meeting in Gothenburg on 8–9 April. Participants at the network meeting will also have the opportunity to share their experiences and thus contribute to the project's mapping efforts.

What is KAFFE?

The KAFFE project (KAFFE = Kartläggning av Förmågor inom Forskningens E-infrastruktursystem, Mapping Capabilities within the Research E-Infrastructure System) focuses on identifying researchers’ needs related to research data management, in connection with the interaction between various Swedish e-infrastructures.
