Trafiksäkerhetsenkäten is an annual road safety study. The survey, one of the oldest ongoing surveys in the area, has been conducted since 1981 by Statistiska centralbyrån on behalf of Trafiksäkerhetsverket (1981-1992), Vägverket (1993-2010) and now Trafikverket (from 2011).
Trafikverket is responsible for the long-term planning of the transport system for road, rail, shipping and aviation. In this lies the overall responsibility for road safety in Sweden. Part of the responsibility includes developing and analyzing traffic safety statistics.
The questions in the survey deal with traffic behavior and traffic habits, attitude to traffic safety and traffic rules, the relationship between alcohol and traffic and children's safety in traffic. As several of the questions are repeated year after year, trafiksäkerhetsenkäten provides an opportunity to study trends and developments over time. The recurring questions about attitudes show, among other things, that it usually takes many years before any major differences in attitudes can be detected. From 1981 to 2003, the survey was conducted during the autumn. From the year 2005, the survey is conducted during the spring. Until the mid-1990s, the survey was sent to approximately 5,000 individuals, and is now expanded to include approximately 10,000 individuals. The selection is stratified by gender, age and geographical areas. The age range of 75-84 years appeared initially at four to five year intervals, but is included since 1997 in all surveys.
