Description

This dataset presents the concentrations of a wide range of substances in three urban streams in Sweden. Data set involves concentrations in stream water collected under dry and wet weather conditions on several occasions as well as a one-time collection of bottom sediment. The collected data included 34 targeted PFAS compounds in water and 35 targeted PFAS in sediment as well as 30 precursors analyzed by total oxidizable precursors assay (TOP-Assay).
For detailed information about the sampling sites and sampling occasions, please refer to "Data_description.pdf."
The file "PFAS_in_water_34_targeted_PFAS.xlsx" contains PFAS concentrations measured in urban streams under dry and wet weather conditions. The file "PFAS_in_sediment_35_targeted_PFAS.xlsx" contains PFAS concentrations in the bottom sediment. The file "PFAS_in_sediment_30PFAS_TOP_Assay.xlsx" includes concentrations of 30 precursor compounds in bottom sediment, analyzed using the TOP Assay method. Units for the data are ng/L for measurements for water and μg/kg dry weight for sediment. All files are also available in CSV format with

Data contains personal data

Yes

Type of personal data

Coordinates pointing to private property are considered personal data. Such coordinates are included in this dataset, but they are not considered to expose individuals to harm or injury, as information about the general condition of the water body is part of the environmental monitoring and the publicly available VISS databases from the County Administrative Board.

Data collection
  • Mode of collection: Field/Intervention experiment
  • Description of the mode of collection:
Water samples from the streams were collected using Teledyne ISCO 6712 portable automatic samplers. The samplers were equipped with 8 of 1.8L glass bottles. These samplers were programmed to take time-proportional sub-samples. The samples were collected 0.5 m below the stream surface. The time intervals for sampling were determined based on the predicted precipitation duration during wet weather. For dry weather sampling, the intervals were consistently set to one hour, with sampling conducted over a 24-hour period. After each sampling event, sub-samples were thoroughly mixed and composited to create a 7.2 L composite sample from each site. The samples were then submitted to ALS Scandinavia AB.

Bottom sediment samples were collected using a powder-coated brass Ekman sediment sampler (Hydro-Bios). Several grab samples were collected, thoroughly mixed and homogenized, and subsequently transferred to Eurofins Environment Testing Sweden AB for further analysis.
  • Time period(s) for data collection: 2022-06 – 2023-10
  • Instrument: Teledyne ISCO 6712 - Teledyne ISCO 6712 is an portable automatic sampler.
  • Instrument: Ekman sampler
Geographic coverage

Geographic spread

Geographic location: Sweden, Uppsala Municipality, Norrköping Municipality, Söderköping Municipality

Geographic description: The sampling sites where stream water was collected are marked on the map below. Bottom sediment samples were collected as close as possible to these marked sampling sites.
