Description

The file contains data on concentrations of mercury in differently aged needles and leaves of four evergreen species: nine needle age classes for Picea abies, fourteen needle age classes for Abies pinsapo var. marocana, and three leaf age classes for both Trochodendron aralioides and Rhododendron catawbiense. For the two conifers, mercury concentrations are also given for the branch segments to which the different needle age classes were attached. The observations were made in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Data collection
  • Mode of collection: Measurements and tests
  • Description of the mode of collection: Differently aged needles and leaves were sampled in the field in the Gothenburg Botanical Garden and its nearby arboretum. The field sampling was made on 21 September for the two evergreen broadleaved species and on 22 September 2020 for the conifers. In the laboratory the differently aged leaves and needles were separated, the samples dried and ground and set to an analytical laboratory for the analysis of the mercury concentration using ICP-MS. Three individuals of each of the four species were sampled and from each tree at least three branches were used in the sampling. For the conifers also the branch segments to which needles of different ages were attached were sampled and analyzed.
  • Time period(s) for data collection: 2020-09-21 – 2020-09-22
  • Data collector: University of Gothenburg
  • Instrument: ICP-MS
  • Source of the data: Biological samples
  • Temporal resolution: 1 year
