Description

In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the prevalence of Mycoplasma bovis in bulk tank milk (BTM) and herd characteristics associated with a positive antibody test result in Swedish dairy herds. BTM samples from all Swedish dairy herds (n=3,144) were collected and analyzed with ID Screen antibody ELISA and PCR. Information on herd characteristics was collected from the national Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) database. To identify herd characteristics associated with the presence of antibodies in BTM, logistic regression was used in four different models. See further information in "Description of data" and the published paper.

Variables utilized in the study (categorized) are found in the file "M_bovis_dataset".
Description by Växa Sverige of the calculation of animal welfare parameters are found in the file "Berakningsprinciper_valfardsindikatorer" (in Swedish only)
Coding of parameters in the data set are found in "Coding_of_variables_M_bovis" and "Coding_of _continuous_variables_into_4_groups"

Sampling procedure

Total universe/Complete enumeration
Bulk tank milk was collected via a national control program including all Swedish dairy herds. A small number of samples were not obtained or lost in transportation to SLU. Only herds in the 10 regions where there were any positive herds are included in the study of animal welfare and production, and thus in the dataset (n=2238). All herds were not affiliated with the Dairy Herd Improvement program, therefore some variables are lacking for such herds, see Description of data. Data on herd size, production and animal welfare indicators were retrieved from Växa Sverige.

Data collection

Data collection 1

  • Mode of collection: Aggregation
  • Description of the mode of collection: Data at herd level on production, reproduction and animal welfare parameters in Swedish dairy herds collected through the Swedish cow control program (Växa Sverige)
  • Time period(s) for data collection: 2018-11-01 – 2019-10-31
  • Data collector: Växa Sverige
  • Source of the data: Registers/Records/Accounts

Data collection 2

  • Mode of collection: Measurements and tests
  • Description of the mode of collection: Bulk milk samples analyzed by ID Screen (IDvet) Elisa for antibodies to Mycoplasma bovis and by PCR Pathoproof Mastitis4 (ThermoFischer)
  • Time period(s) for data collection: 2019-11-01 – 2019-11-30
  • Data collector: SLU
  • Source of the data: Research data
Geographic coverage

Geographic spread

Geographic location: Sweden

Geographic description: In the study we analyzed bulk milk samples from dairy cattle herds located in all regions of Sweden, but the analysis of herd characteristics associated with Mycoplasma bovis infection was limited to the 10 regions where there were herds positive for the infection. These were Götaland (southern Sweden) + Uppland. Therefore the dataset only includes herds in these regions. For specification of included regions, see the published paper.
