                            INTRODUCTION

                             BACKGROUND

    Purpose

For the 26th anniversary of the Jung-Ang Daily News, this
survey was executed for examining the pattern of Korean
opinion and value structure. Such questions as Korean
unification, prospect and perception on the current
political situation, assessment of the Sixth Republics and
various institutions, and so on, were mainly focused in the
    year's questionnaire.

    Research method

    1. Population was the whole Korean adults (age of 20 and
over) except the inhabitants residing in the demilitarized
zone and small islands. The sample size was 1800. The survey
was conducted in the period between 13 and 20 August, 1991.

    2. Based on the multi-stage systematic clustering
probability method, the sample was drawn from 'Do' (or
    'Tukbyolshi'/'Jikhalshi'), 'Shi'/'Kun', 'Ku', 'Eop'/'Myon',
    'Dong', and 'Ri'.

    3. Firstly, by the proportion of adult population the sample
size was pre-decided for the nine provinces, six
'Tukbyolshi' and 'Jikhalshi', and so on, and then for the
practical convenience of the interview the number of 5-7
respondents were drawn from the administrative divisions of
    'Eop', 'Myon', or 'Dong'.

    4. On the basis of the number of inhabitants, sampling was
drawn from 'Dong' in city area and 'Eop' and 'Myon' in the
    non-city area.

    5. Followingly, 'Tong' and 'Ri' were systematically drawn
from the city area and non-city area, respectively.

    6. The house of administrative head of 'Tong' and 'Ri' was
the starting point. To the right of the starting point the
first sample was interviewed, and the next and so on.

    7. At interview, all adults of the family were asked to
register to the interviewer and then on the basis of
sampling principle and in consideration of gender and age a
    interview person was decided.

    8. After interviewing the whole districts, about 90 percent
of the interview cases were classified to the research data.
The data was computed by SPSS-x at the computer section of
    the company.

    9. The error level of the survey was +/- 2.3 at the 95
    percent significance level.

    Administrative classification in South Korea

    Special City/Autonomy Cities/Provinces

In Korea, there are one special city ('Tukbyolshi'), five
autonomy cities ('Jikhalshi'), and nine provinces ('DO').
The administrative classification is mainly based on the
scale of regional inhabitants, but some considerations like
its regional status and importance were also esteemed. For
example, the name of 'Tykbyolshi' is used for the capital
city, Seoul, and 'Jikhalshi' for the cities that have more
than approximately 600 000 inhabitants. When an ordinary
city was advanced to 'Jikhalshi', the motto of 'Fair and
balanced development of the nation' was also considered. The
heads of regional- and local government, however, are still
    appointed by the central government.

    'Tykbyolshi' (special city): Seoul
'Jikhalshi' (autonomy city): Pusan, Taegu, Kwangju, Inchon,
    Daejong
    'Do' (province): Kyongki-Do (abbr. Kyongki),
    Choong-Chong-Buk-Do (Choongbuk), Choong-Chong-Nam-Do
    (Choongnam), Kyong-Sang-Buk-Do (Kyongbuk), Kyong-Sang-Nam-Do
    (Kyongnam), Cholla-Buk-Do (Chonbuk), Cholla-Nam-Do
    (Chonnam), Kwangwon-Do (Kangwon), Cheju-Do (Cheju).

    Other administrative classifications

'Tukbyolshi' and 'Jikhalshi' are composed of small districts
which are called 'Ku'. In turn, the districts are divided
into small resident and commercial areas which are called
'Dong'. Followingly, 'Dong' is partitioned on the basis of
block or street which is called 'Tong'. In the same way,
'Tong' is partitioned into 'Ban'. All the names mentioned
are written in a row (for example, 20 Tong 1 Ban, Shillim
    5-Dong, Kwanak-Ku, Seoul-Tukbyolshi, 151-015, Korea).

Similarly, the nine provinces have their partitioned
districts, areas, and blocks. There are two different
    combinations: 1) Ban-Tong-Dong-(Ku)-Shi-Do and 2)
Ri-Myon/Eop-Kun-Do. The former is frequently used in the
small or medium sized cities which are more urbanized,
whereas the latter in the traditional farming areas.
Accordingly, 'Eop/Myon' is representing small farming area,
while small/medium cities, which are called 'Shi', mean more
    developed areas.
