=== METHOD === Bottom water properties were measured in situ using benthic chamber landers (Kononets et al. 2021). Oxygen concentrations were measured by optodes (Aanderaa Data Instruments, Norway). Nutrient samples were filtered (0.45 µm cellulose acetate) and measured by segmented flow analysis (QuAAtro, XY-3 Sampler, Seal Analytical 2015). Sediment cores were collected with a multiple corer (inner Ø 9.9 cm). The cores were vertically sectioned in 0.5 cm intervals and were freeze dried. The dried sediment was ground into a homogeneous powder and analyzed for total nitrogen and organic carbon after treatment with HCl (37 %) fumes by elemental analysis isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS, Sercon). Due to technical issues, there are no solid phase samples from 2018. Sal_max - maximum bottom water salinity measured with the benthic chamber lander. Temp_min - minimum bottom water temperature (°C) measured with the benthic chamber lander. Temp_max - maximum bottom water temperature (°C) measured with the benthic chamber lander. O2_min - minimum bottom water oxygen concentration (µM) measured with the benthic chamber lander. O2_max - maximum bottom water oxygen concentration (µM) measured with the benthic chamber lander. NOx_min - minimum bottom water nitrite + nitrate concentration (µM) measured with the benthic chamber lander. NOx_max - maximum bottom water nitrite + nitrate concentration (µM) measured with the benthic chamber lander. OC - average organic carbon content (% dry weight) in the top 2 cm of the sediment. N - average nitrogen content (% dry weight) in the top 2 cm of the sediment. OC_N - ratio between the organic carbon and nitrogen contents (mol:mol dry weight) in the top 2 cm of the sediment.
